Girls who surf - Alexandra

Where do you usually surf?
Long Island, New York

How did you get into surfing?
I am a third-generation surfer! I grew up surfing on Long Island with my immediate family and then visiting my cousins and grandparents in Southern California, surfing epic breaks like San Onofre. Even now, our favorite way to get together and hang out is on the beach and in the water.

Why did you start surfing?
I got more serious about surfing in my twenties when I realized it was the perfect escape from my job. I am an ocean journalist, and I love what I do, but I needed an off-button. The water is the best way for me to disconnect.

What was your biggest fear when you started?
I am also an ocean lifeguard and an open-water swimmer, so I’m not scared of the ocean in general. My biggest fear was that I would never get better despite how much time and effort I put into surfing.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to other surfer girls?
Always smile at other women in the water! Sometimes it can be intimidating if you're the only lady or one of two in the lineup, so smiling at other ladies and encouraging them really helps me.

Tell us a funny, embarrassing, or inspiring surf story!
One time in Sri Lanka, I went surfing super early with some friends so we could be the first people in the lineup. When we arrived, it was just us at the beach. But as we were paddling out, I got stuck and couldn’t move forward. My friend told me it was an alligator, and I started freaking out. It was a rock!!! In the end, though, I had an epic wave, so it was well worth it.
